November Newsletter
Principal's Message
We are trying to email parents our newsletter, if you have not given the school your email address, please give us a call or you can send it to me at adoiron@chelseaeagles.org

It is amazing to think that we are already closing in on Thanksgiving Break and 1st trimester grades.  Grades will be sent out in December 8th for the first trimester. We hope that you found mid-semester conferences helpful in congratulating or assisting your child on areas that they need to work on before the end of the trimester.

Cold weather is fast approaching. Students need to come to school appropriately dressed. On cold days students who are not appropriately dressed may not be allowed to go out to recess. We would like all students to have the ability to go out to recess. This is an important part of their day.

We would like to remind parents that have not been to visit the school for a while to please come to an event or activity. There are a lot of great activities happening at Chelsea School!

** Parents, we would like to remind you that Chelsea School does not have anyone on duty in the mornings before 7:50 a.m. We would ask that parents not send in their children before 7:50 a.m.  Although teachers are in the building before that time they are preparing for their school day and not on duty to supervise.  Thank you

**Parents, we are in desperate need for boxes of tissues for the classrooms. These products greatly reduce the spread of flu and cold symptoms. Thank you for anything you can provide!!

Mr. Doiron

Kindergarten - Mrs. Galarneau and Mrs. Beeckel
Our kindergarten friends have been very busy this month. We have been learning to identify, write, and learn the letter sounds for C, B, M, H and O. We have read the story called Chick a Chick a Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and created an alphabet tree. In math we have been working on extending patterns and beginning numeral recognition and counting with 1 to 1 correspondences. We would like to remind you that the weather is getting colder and the children should be dressed appropriately with a warm coat, hat and mittens. We try and go outside for recess whenever the weather will let us.
1st Grade - Mrs. Johnson

Time is going by fast in first grade! In math, we have just started our new Math Investigations book. Building Number Sense. This unit focuses numbers in different ways.  In literacy, we continue to work on new word families and we even got to illustrate the book In a Dark, Dark, Wood. The students really enjoyed this spooky story!

In social studies and science, we learned about the forest and fire safety. We even got a special visit from the Chelsea fire department!

2nd Grade - Mrs. Acosta

In social studies and science we are wrapping up our desert unit. We have enjoyed our worldly travels exploring different kinds of deserts. We are finishing our desert unit by making cactus shaped fact books. We are beginning a unit on Colonial America.

In math, we are finishing up our graphing unit. Students have learned to tally graph, pictograph, and bar graph. We have been busy graphing different classroom manipulatives.

In reading, we have been working on co-operative learning in pairs. This has been very successful.

We are looking forward to our field trip coming up in November to Old Fort Western in Augusta.
3rd Grade - Mrs. Delgallo and Mrs. Pelletier
Third graders just finished their annual math project called "Pumpkin Math".  We estimated and then measured height, circumference, and weight of each pumpkin.  Next we estimated and counted the seeds.  Finally, we drew faces and carved our pumpkins!  In science we are doing a mini unit on bats.  We are finishing up a unit on the continents and oceans in Social Studies.
4th Grade - Mrs. Biswell  and Mrs. Rush

Our Grandparent Tea will be on November 3 from 1:45 to 2:50 in the Chelsea gym.  We have completed our stories and we are practicing reading them in front of the microphone.  It is an exciting time and 4th graders are anxious to tell their grandparents how special they are.

In math we are learning our multiplication facts.  We emphasize the 6 through 12 tables.  Please encourage your 4th grader to learn these. We have completed our place value unit and we are working on graphs.

It was wonderful to see so many parents at conference time.  Thank you.

5th and 6th Grade - Mr. Crosby and Mr. Todd

In Math the students have done very well with an 89 average for all quizzes. They are learning about place, value, exponents, estimating, distributive, commutative and associative properties. We are also learning about the formulas for volume, perimeter, mpg and mean.

In Reading we are reading Hatchet and having a lot of fun. We have also been studying about main ideas and supporting details and conclusions and inference.

In writing we are writing expository essays after learning about super beginnings, body and endings. We have been learning grammar with daily “mug shots”.

7th and 8th Grade - Mr. Gammon, Mrs. Perry, Miss McDonough, and Mrs. Raymond

We enjoyed meeting all of the parents who made it to the parent/teacher conferences this week.  The first trimester ends on December 1st, so there is plenty of time to get those grades where they need to be.  Remind your students to use their daily planner and to come to teachers for extra help during tutorial!  These are opportunities we’ve put in place to help your student achieve success.

Students received their laptops recently, and the excitement on the team is palpable!  The new computers are wonderful tools and will be used often in the classroom.  Mr. Gammon and Mrs. Perry went to a workshop Monday and Tuesday to learn about one of the programs available on the laptop.  It is called “Noteshare” and it is a truly amazing program.  We will use it to create “notebooks” for the students to place in their computers.  The notebook allows us to organize and share information.  When students begin to bring their laptops home, they will only need to bring the laptop, because all of the material they need, handouts, worksheets, textbooks, etc. will already be in the computer.  We even can copy a website for students who do not have Internet access at home.

There are a lot of exciting things going on at school…be sure to ask for an update from your student.

Art News - Mrs. Dunn
Congratulations to Crystal Clark. Her bus safety poster won first prize at the state level. On Nov. 1 Crystal went to the Blaine House in Augusta to receive her award. We are very proud of you Crystal!

The eighth graders have been learning about ancient Egyptian art and culture. They carved and decorated modern versions of mummy cases. Hopefully these will be on display in the trophy case soon.

Third graders have been learning about the art of Michelangelo. They have been enjoying doing some carving projects.

Our student artist of the month for November is Kayla Albert in grade 8. Kayla has done some beautiful drawings as well as some wood-burning. Her work is on display in the hallway this month. Kayla's artwork won some awards at the Windsor Fair this year!
Spanish News - Mrs. Murch
In 3rd grade we are having fun learning the numbers. We are also doing a little "mathematics" in Spanish. In 6th grade we have started with our family unit. We will soon be talking about our family members in Spanish. In 8th grade we are practicing our Spanish as we talk about ourselves and family members.

Music News - Mr. Morgan
The students and I are beginning to work on our concert for the holiday season. The concert will be held on Tuesday December 12 at 6:30. The concert will include performances from grades K-5, the chorus and the band. A snow date has been set for December 14.

I am continuing to work on rhythms and steady beat with all my grades. The chorus is now learning how to sing in harmony. The band is also working on playing music with separate parts and harmony. My beginning band students have been working hard and are now learning the first songs!

In addition to the two school concerts, band students will be performing on May 17th in our annual Union concert. In order to perform in the union concert the band students must be able to play page 18 in their lesson books. This Union concert gives our band students the opportunity to work with a bigger band and meet students from other schools. Rehearsals for the union band will begin in January.
Guidance - Mrs. Blake
I recently started teaching a unit on Bullying Prevention in 4th grade classrooms. This will continue on a weekly basis through the month.

In Health, 5th grade students have been learning about self-esteem, and the importance of positive comments versus negative comments (put downs) in getting along with each other. They are currently learning how rumors and gossip can affect friendships.
